Large Magellanic Cloud Near-infrared Synoptic Survey. I. Cepheid Variables and the Calibration of the Leavitt Law

چکیده
We present observational details and first results of a near-infrared (JHKs) synoptic survey of the central region of the Large Magellanic Cloud using the CPAPIR camera at the CTIO 1.5-m telescope. We covered 18 sq. deg. to a depth of Ks∼16.5 mag and obtained an average of 16 epochs in each band at any given location. Our catalog contains more than 5×106 sources, including 1417 Cepheid variables previously studied at optical wavelengths by the OGLE survey. Our sample of fundamental-mode pulsators represents a 9-fold increase in the number of these variables with time-resolved, multi-band near-infrared photometry. We combine our large Cepheid sample and a recent precise determination of the distance to the LMC to derive a robust absolute calibration of the near-infrared Leavitt Law for fundamental-mode and first-overtone Cepheids with 10× better constraints on the slopes relative to previous work. We also obtain calibrations for the Tip of the Red Giant Branch and the Red Clump based on our ensemble photometry which are in good agreement with previous determinations. The Cepheid Period - Luminosity Relation ( The Leavitt Law ) at Mid - Infrared Wavelengths : III . Cepheids in NGC 6822
We present the first application of mid-infrared Period-Luminosity relations to the determination of a Cepheid distance beyond the Magellanic Clouds. Using archival IRAC imaging data on NGC 6822 from Spitzer we were able to measure single-epoch magnitudes for sixteen long-period (10 to 100-day) Cepheids at 3.6μm, fourteen at 4.5μm, ten at 5.8μm and four at 8.0μm. The measured slopes and the obs...
متن کاملConsistent distances from Baade-Wesselink analyses of Cepheids and RR Lyraes
By using the same algorithm in the Baade-Wesselink analyses of Galactic RR Lyrae and Cepheid variables, it is shown that, within 0.03 mag 1σ statistical error, they yield the same distance modulus for the Large Magellanic Cloud. By fixing the zero point of the color–temperature calibration to those of the current infrared flux methods and using updated period–luminosity–color relations, we get ...
متن کاملThe VMC Survey . VIII . First results for Anomalous Cepheids ⋆
The VISTA near-infrared Y JKs survey of the Magellanic Clouds System (VMC, PI M.-R. L. Cioni) is collecting deep Ks–band time–series photometry of the pulsating variable stars hosted in the system formed by the two Magellanic Clouds and the Bridge connecting them. In this paper we present for the first time Ks–band light curves for Anomalous Cepheid (AC) variables. In particular, we have analys...
متن کاملCepheid variables in the LMC cluster NGC 1866. I. New BVRI CCD photometry
We report BV (RI)C CCD photometric data for a group of seven Cepheid variables in the young, rich cluster NGC 1866 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The photometry was obtained as part of a program to determine accurate distances to these Cepheids by means of the infrared surface brightness technique, and to improve the LMC Cepheid database for constructing Cepheid PL and PLC relations. Using the ...
متن کاملThe Cepheid Period - Luminosity Relation ( The Leavitt Law ) at Mid - Infrared Wavelengths : IV . Cepheids in IC 1613
We present mid-infrared Period-Luminosity relations for Cepheids in the Local Group galaxy IC 1613. Using archival IRAC imaging data from Spitzer we were able to measure single-epoch magnitudes for five, 7 to 50-day, Cepheids at 3.6 and 4.5μm. When fit to the calibrating relations, measured for the Large Magellanic Cloud Cepheids, the data give apparent distance moduli of 24.29±0.07 and 24.28±0...
